   <International Diabetes>: I am here today at the ADA 2014 Scientific Sessions, Dr. Solimena I would like to ask you a little bit about this afternoon, we know you have a lecture discussing insulin release.  Can you tell us a little bit about the information you will be presenting and some of your experience and research with insulin and what you found?

  Professor Solimena : What we are interested in understanding is the pancreatic beta cell produces insulin and regulates the stores of the organelle that releases insulin in response to up regulation of glucose levels in the blood. It is clear by now that the maintenance, or the insulin stores, is critical for the viability of the beta cell and it is also clear that the stores are very dynamic and they are different rules of the organelle that differently contributes to the release of insulin.  This is especially of interest because we know that in diabetes we have 2 types of diabetes, but that there is a lack of the first phase of insulin secretion but it is still unclear which pool of the secretory granule is depleted or missing.  Therefore our studies are aimed at elucidating which are the molecular features and eventually finding a molecular signature that correlates with the agent of the secretory gland.  So what I am sure of is that granules, over time of their life in the beta cell, change their properties and this may allow us to identify in greater depth what are the reasons for the change in secretion in type 2 diabetes.

   <International Diabetes>: : Do we know today if there is a specific aspect and is there a different amongst populations from different regions or ethnicities?  Have you looked at that?
  Professor Solimena: That is not something that we at the moment can address.  As I said in the first step we need to elucidate the molecular signature that associates with aging, if you wish, for the secretory granule and then we can identify whether some of these genes are differentially represented in several different ethnic groups.
